Artificial neural networks employment in the prediction of evapotranspiration of greenhouse-grown sweet pepper AGRIAMBI
Pandorfi,Héliton; Bezerra,Alan C.; Atarassi,Roberto T.; Vieira,Frederico M. C.; Barbosa Filho,José A. D.; Guiselini,Cristiane.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the applicability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in the prediction of evapotranspiration of sweet pepper cultivated in a greenhouse. The used data encompass the second crop cycle, from September 2013 to February 2014, constituting 135 days of daily meteorological data, referring to the following variables: temperature and relative air humidity, wind speed and solar radiation (input variables), as well as evapotranspiration (output variable), determined using data obtained by load-cell weighing lysimeter. The recorded data were divided into three sets for training, testing and validation. The ANN learning model recognized the evapotranspiration patterns with acceptable accuracy, with mean square error of 0.005,...

Effect of relative humidity on emergence and on dispersal and regrouping of first instar Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Hirose,Edson; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Cattelan,Alexandre J..
Laboratory studies with 1st instar of southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) indicated that relative humidity (RH) greatly affected nymph emergence and survivorship up to the 2nd instar, reaching the maximum value (<FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 90%) with RH of > 80%. At 60% RH, 60% of the nymphs emerged and survived, while with 0% RH only <FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 15% of eggs hatched, and most nymphs died. Emerged nymphs from egg masses placed in plastic boxes with a gradient of humidity remained on egg shells for ca. one day. After this period, they dispersed and regrouped on top of shells 6.8 ± 0.67 times, until they abandoned the shells toward the source of humidity, avoiding the water-saturated areas. Duration taken for...

Pezzopane, José Ricardo Macedo; Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo; Souza, Paulo Sérgio de; Escola Agrotécnica Federal de Muzambinho; Rolim, Glauco de Souza; Instituto Agronomico de Campinas; Gallo, Paulo Boller; Pólo APTA Nordeste Paulista.
Measurements of solar global radiation, wind speed, temperature and relative humidity of air were made in a coffee plantation (Coffea Arabica L. variety Icatu Vermelho- IAC 4045), grown under conditions of shading levels caused by grevillea trees (Grevillea robusta) in Mococa-SP region (21&deg; 28’ S, 47&deg; 01’ W, altitude 665m), between January and December 2005, aiming to show the effects of shading crop system on the microclimate. The results showed that there was a reduction of about 26% of solar global radiation in the shaded systems, with a monthly variation of 24-30%. It has been highlighted some differences in the transmittance of global radiation in the shaded coffee trees due to the spatial variation of grevillea canopy. There was a...

Microenvironments in swine farrowing rooms: the thermal, lighting, and acoustic environments of sows and piglets Scientia Agricola
Morello,Gabriela Munhoz; Lay Jr.,Donald C.; Rodrigues,Luiz Henrique Antunes; Richert,Brian T.; Marchant-Forde,Jeremy Neville.
ABSTRACT: The present research hypothesized that the thermal, lighting and acoustic environments in commercial swine farrowing rooms vary over time and from crate to crate. This study was conducted on 27 replicates in two commercial farrowing rooms in North Central Indiana, each equipped with 60 farrowing crates. Temperature, relative humidity, light intensity, sound intensity, and air velocity were continuously monitored and estimated for each crate at the sow level, for 48 h post-farrowing, which is usually a critical period for piglet survivability. Average daily temperature for all the crates in Room 1 was 24.1 ± 2.0 °C, 1.0 °C lower (p < 0.05) than in Room 2. Although the overall mean temperature was similar between rooms and seasons, frequency...

Silvopastoral system with Eucalyptus as a strategy for mitigating the effects of climate change on Brazilian pasturelands Anais da ABC (AABC)
BOSI,CRISTIAM; PEZZOPANE,JOSÉ RICARDO M.; SENTELHAS,PAULO CESAR.
Abstract The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of Eucalyptus trees in a silvopastoral system on the microclimate and the capacity of that to mitigate the effects of climate change on pasturelands. This study included an open pasture of Piatã palisadegrass and an adjacent pasture that contained both palisadegrass and East-to-West rows of Eucalyptus trees, with 15 m between rows, 2 m between trees within rows. The micrometeorological measurements were collected at several distances from the tree rows and in the open pasture. The silvopastoral system was associated with greater between-row shading when solar declination was high and greater near-tree shading when solar declination was around -22°. Both soil heat flux and temperature were...

Spatial variability of leaf wetness duration in cotton, coffee and banana crop canopies Scientia Agricola
Santos,Eduardo Alvarez; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Pezzopane,José Eduardo Macedo; Angelocci,Luiz Roberto; Monteiro,José Eduardo Boffino Almeida.
Despite the importance of leaf wetness duration for plant disease epidemiology, there has been little attention paid to research on how its variability relates to different cropping situations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of leaf wetness duration (LWD) in three crops, comparing these measurements with turfgrass LWD, obtained in a standard weather station. LWD was measured by electronic sensors in three crops with different canopy structures and leaf area: cotton, coffee and banana. For the cotton crop, cylindrical sensors were deployed at the lower third and on the top of the canopy, facing southwest. For the coffee crop, flat plate sensors were installed in the lower third of the canopy facing northeast and...

Temporal Crop Coefficients and Water Productivity of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Hydroponics In Planthouse CIGR Journal
Muharomah, Riani; Setiawan, Budi Indra; Purwanto, Mohamad Yanuar Jarwadi; Liyantono, Liyantono.
Almost all countries in the world have used lettuce hydroponic cultivation in planthouses because it is appropriate for plant growth and production. The microclimate inside planthouse is an environmental factor that affects plant growth and development. Vegetables planted in the planthouse have a great deal of water requirement. Selecting a method with a more accurate estimation of crop evapotranspiration is a critical factor for efficient water management. In this research, the climates that are affecting the lettuce evapotranspiration with modification of floating hydroponic technique inside the planthouse were investigated. The objectives of this research are to figure out the microclimate, the appropriate model of the potential evapotranspiration, and...

The abiotic environment of Heliamphora nutans (Sarraceniaceae): pedological and microclimatic observations on Roraima Tepui BABT
Adlassnig,Wolfram; Pranji,Kornelija; Mayer,Edith; Steinhauser,Georg; Hejjas,Flora; Lichtscheidl,Irene K..
The aim of this study was the study of the abiotic environment of the carnivorous pitcher plant Heliamphora nutans (Sarraceniaceae), including the microclimate and the geochemistry of the soil of the growing sites on Roraima Tepui and discuss their relevance within the recent model of carnivorous plant ecology. The soil was peaty and low in nutrients. The microclimate on the site was very balanced, with moderately cool temperatures, a constant high humidity and very low wind speed. Heliamphora was not exposed to any recognizable climatic stress. Previous macroclimatic measurements reflected the growth conditions of Heliamphora only incorrectly, since humidity decreased drastically with height. The apparent conflict with the common model of carnivorous...

The effects of fragmentation on Araucaria forest: analysis of the fern and lycophyte communities at sites subject to different edge conditions Acta Botanica
Silva,Vinícius Leão da; Schmitt,Jairo Lizandro.
Edge effects impact species richness and composition as a result of environmental changes caused by fragmentation. This study analyzed edge effects on a community of terrestrial ferns and lycophytes in an Araucaria forest in Brazil at sites subjected to differing edge conditions: (1) a site bordering a road running through the interior of a conservation unit, and (2) a site bordering an agricultural property. Twelve 10 × 10 m plots were selected at the edge and in the interior of each site, and accounted for a total of 48 plots. The edges had lost their characteristic floristic identity, suggesting that many species are sensitive to variations in environmental conditions. The edge effect had a negative impact on species richness as shown by the greater...
